  1. Choose or drop a PDF file.

  3. Press “Extract text”. View the text page by page, copy it all, or download it as a UTF-8 TXT file.
  4. If no text is found, the PDF is a scan: use OCR: Image and PDF to Text to recognize it.

Tips

  • “Join the lines of each paragraph” turns each paragraph into one line, so it pastes cleanly into Word or Google Docs.
  • If the file has an open password, you will be asked for it. The password is only used on your device.

FAQ

Why is the result empty?

The PDF has no text layer. It is usually a scan or a PDF made from images. Use OCR: Image and PDF to Text to recognize the text in the images instead.

Will Chinese or Japanese text get extra spaces?

No. Lines and paragraphs are rebuilt from the text positions: no spaces are inserted between Chinese or Japanese characters, while spaces between English words are kept.

Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?

Yes. If the file needs a password to open, you will be asked for it. Files that only restrict copying or printing work directly. You can also remove the password first with Unlock PDF.

Is the layout preserved?

You get the text, line breaks and paragraphs only, not fonts, colors, table borders or images. Multi-column pages usually come out in the order they are stored in the PDF.

Can it extract vertical Japanese text?

Yes. Vertical text is output top to bottom and right to left, one column per line. In a few files with unusual layouts the order may not be fully correct.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The text is extracted in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
